Androgeny jsou hormony produkované nadledvinami a pohlavními žlázami, mužskými i ženskými. U mužů jsou hlavními producenty androgenů varlata, zatímco u žen jsou tyto hormony syntetizovány důležitým způsobem jak buňkami vaječníků, tak nadledvinami.
Slovo androgen má řecký původ a znamená „které produkují člověka“. Ve skutečnosti jsou to charakteristické hormony mužského pohlaví, vybavené mnoha funkcemi; podívejme se na ty hlavní:
- v embryu: mužská diferenciace vnitřních a vnějších genitálií.
- V pubertě: vývoj sekundárních sexuálních charakteristik; nárůst svalové hmoty; dosažení špičkové kostní hmoty; psychické modifikace (agrese); vývoj vlasů, libido a funkce spermií.
- U dospělých: udržení maskulinity a libida, udržení sekundárních sexuálních charakteristik, svalová síla, trofismus kůže a kostní hmota.
Androgeny jsou také velmi důležitými hormony u žen, přestože jsou v ženském organismu přítomny v mnohem nižších koncentracích. Představují chemický substrát pro syntézu estrogenů, typicky ženských hormonů, které plní paralelní funkce. Tato konverze je zvláště důležitá pro sexuální impuls a pro syntézu nových červených krvinek (viz erytropoetin).
Nejdůležitějším a nejznámějším androgenem je testosteron, ale do této rodiny patří i další hormony, jako je dehydroepiandrosteron (DHEA), androstenedion, androstenediol, androsterone a dihydrotestosterone. Ten představuje nejaktivnější metabolit testosteronu a jeho nadbytek je často doprovázen problémy, jako je akné, androgenetická alopecie a hirsutismus.
Použití androgenů, přírodních nebo chemických derivátů, v terapeutické oblasti se věnuje léčbě mužského hypogonadismu, sexuální impotence, osteoporózy a stavů závažné organické oslabení (kachexie). Ve sportu se používají ke zvýšení sportovního výkonu (viz: anabolické steroidy).
